TEMPLATE PREVIEW
WHY BUDGET BEFORE YOU GO
Most road trip cost disputes happen because nobody planned ahead. One person expected a cheap weekend while another booked a boutique hotel. Setting expectations before you leave prevents arguments on the road.
This template helps you estimate total costs and agree on per-person contributions before you pack the car. After the trip, fill in the actual numbers to see how close you were.
HOW TO USE IT
Step 1: Enter each leg of your route with the distance. Use Google Maps or Apple Maps to get accurate driving distances.
Step 2: Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency and current fuel price. The template calculates fuel costs automatically.
Step 3: Add accommodation, food, activity, toll, and parking estimates for each day or stop.
Step 4: The template totals everything and divides by the number of riders to give you a per-person estimate.
Step 5: After the trip, enter actual costs in the comparison column to see how your budget held up.
Track Costs in Real-Time
While this template is great for planning, Free Rider Problem tracks actual trip costs as you go. Log each leg, split automatically between riders, and keep a running balance.

- Use real fuel prices from GasBuddy or your local station
- Add 15% to your fuel estimate for real-world conditions
- Budget $15-25 per person per meal for food estimates
- Check toll rates online before assuming the highway is free
- Factor in parking costs for cities and national parks
- For EV trips, budget charging stops at public charger rates (often 2-3x home rates)
