GETTING STARTED
How do I create an account?
Open the app, pick a name, get your invite code, add a vehicle. That's it. No email, no phone number, no password.
How do I add a friend?
Share your 6-character invite code. They type it in, you're connected. No phone numbers or emails involved. You can also turn on "Friends of Friends" to automatically link up with your friends' friends.
What's an invite code?
Your invite code is a unique 6-character alphanumeric code (like "A3X9K2") that identifies you in the app. Share it with friends so they can add you. You'll find it on your Home screen.
TRIP LOGGING
How is the trip cost calculated?
The formula is: (distance in km / 100) x vehicle efficiency x energy rate. For gas cars, efficiency is in L/100km and energy rate is the price per litre. For EVs, efficiency is in kWh/100km and energy rate is the price per kWh. The total cost is split equally between all riders on the trip.
How is distance calculated?
The app uses Apple Maps (MKDirections) to calculate driving distance from your origin and destination. This runs on your device, so your data isn't sent to any third party.
Can I use MPG instead of L/100km?
Yes. When you add a vehicle, pick L/100km, MPG (US), or MPG (Imperial) for gas, or kWh/100km for electric. The app converts everything internally so the math stays accurate.
What about return trips?
Toggle "Return Trip" when logging and it doubles the distance and cost. One entry instead of two.
Can I log a trip with multiple drivers?
Yes. Tag multiple people as drivers when logging a trip. The cost split counts all riders equally regardless of who drove.
VEHICLES & FUEL
Does Free Rider Problem support electric vehicles?
Yes. Set your vehicle's efficiency in kWh/100km and enter your electricity rate. The interface switches to green when you pick an EV.
What fuel types are supported?
Gas, Diesel, Hybrid, and Electric. Each fuel type uses the same core formula but with appropriate efficiency units. Hybrid vehicles use L/100km like gas cars.
Can I have multiple vehicles?
Yes. Add as many vehicles as you want in the Garage tab. Set one as your default vehicle for quick trip logging. Each vehicle remembers its last energy rate.
BALANCES & SETTLEMENTS
How do I settle up?
Go to the Ledger tab. Tap "Settle Up" on any balance. Pay your friend however you want (cash, e-transfer, whatever) and mark it settled in the app. The app tracks the math, not the money.
Are balances in real-time?
Yes. Balances sync in real-time across all devices using Convex. When someone logs a trip, everyone's balances update instantly.
DEVICE & COMPATIBILITY
What devices are supported?
iPhone running iOS 18 or later. Optimized for iPhone 16 Pro, but works on any iPhone with iOS 18+.
Is there an Android version?
Not right now. It's iOS only. If enough people ask for Android, we'll look into it.
Is there a web version?
No. It's built as a native iOS app so it can use Apple Maps, haptics, and the full arcade experience.

Is Free Rider Problem free?
Yes, completely free. No in-app purchases, no subscriptions, no ads. All features are available to everyone.
